Our work

... and why it is needed

Psychiatric patients and others suffering from mental ill-health typically have unmet spiritual needs, often through a lack of opportunity for contact with traditional faith institutions and the personal relationships that stem from them. Pastoral Carers Association fills this void by promoting and facilitating connections between religious beliefs, spirituality and higher levels of overall wellbeing.

Our personal and pastoral interaction with our clients is the foundation on which their spiritual needs are satisfied. Academic research and practical experience provide the evidence supporting the link between spirituality practices and better health and wellbeing. Although the impact of spirituality on individuals will vary, it consistently offers a sense of meaning and coherence and a feeling of confidence and optimism. Together, these encourage people to quieten the mind and develop a more hopeful and positive outlook on life.

A high proportion of mental health patients become socially isolated, particularly since the emphasis on treatment has moved away from institutional care.  These effected people tend to focus on insecurities and past negative experiences, leading to instances of panic, depression or anxiety. Studies have established that mental health patients fare better if they have access to this social support and interaction, strengthening them physically and mentally. The social connections and friendships we establish with and between our clients is now more important than ever.

Pastoral Carers Association is committed to continuing this work in the community for the benefit of the people who would otherwise be denied appropriate pastoral care, the benefits of friendship and community and the advantages of better overall wellbeing.
